Billie Jean King marked the 50th anniversary of the Women's Sports Foundation by honoring various individuals and groups who have contributed to the advancement of women in sports. The foundation, initially started with a $5,000 check, has grown into a $100 million organization that supports girls and women in achieving their athletic dreams through grants, programs, and mentorship.

At the celebratory event in New York, the 1999 U.S. women's World Cup champions, PWHL and Los Angeles Dodgers co-owner Mark Walter, and the 2024 WNBA rookie class were recognized for their contributions to women's sports.

King, a prominent advocate for equal pay and increased investment in women's sports, emphasized the importance of creating opportunities and dreams for others. The event brought together nearly 100 female athletes to commemorate the foundation's milestone and King's enduring commitment to gender equality in sports.

One of the honorees, former U.S. soccer player Julie Foudy, highlighted King's pivotal role in empowering female athletes. Foudy recalled seeking advice from King on improving pay and establishing a professional soccer league after the 1999 World Cup victory, which ultimately led to significant strides in gender equity within U.S. soccer.

King's influence extends beyond soccer, as she recently collaborated with Mark and Kimbra Walter to launch the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL), aimed at unifying the fragmented landscape of women's professional hockey.

The event also recognized the WNBA rookie class, including standout players like Caitlin Clark, for their impact on the league's growth and popularity. Despite disparities in pay compared to their male counterparts, WNBA players are poised to benefit from a new media rights deal that could lead to increased salaries and revenue sharing.

Looking ahead, King emphasized the need for continued advocacy and investment in women's sports to bridge the existing pay gaps and ensure long-term sustainability. As a trailblazer in women's athletics, King's legacy continues to inspire future generations of female athletes.

King's upcoming milestone includes receiving the Congressional Gold Medal, a prestigious honor recognizing her enduring impact on the world of sports and gender equality.
