Billie Eilish just announced her third album "Hit Me Hard and Soft" which will debut next month — you can pre-save it on Spotify now. As fashion's favorite chameleon, we think the album's title perfectly sums up Eilish's experimental style and her ability to turn up the Marilyn Monroe glamour on the red carpet one minute and do androgynous grunge the next. All the while changing her hair color faster than most of us change our underwear.
"From her chart-topping hits to her ever-changing style and queer advocacy, Billie has become a major force in fashion and culture," says Sarah Miekle, Fashion Times fashion market director.
Ahead we decode Eilish's personal and fashion evolution, which has been full of surprises.
Billie is a Fashion Chameleon
We love how she can rock a variety of styles, from blonde bombshell to punk tomboy. Eilish, who went for more of a bombshell vibe for her last album Happier Than Ever with a Marilyn Monroe-style blonde haircut and soft makeup, admitted that blonde wasn't her favorite look. "I completely had no idea who I was," she told the Los Angeles Times. "I came up with this whole aesthetic, and I just got swallowed up into it."
Finding Her Manstyle Punk Grunge Edge
Eilish has gone back to her edgier roots — quite literally. First with a red and black hairstyle and more recently a soft solid brown. A decidedly more classic choice, the new hue ushers in Eilish's "chic tomboy" era, which she's implemented on recent red carpets in a tweed Chanel pencil skirt and blazer and a pinstriped baggy suit and with her modern take on tomboy suiting.
Eilish's knack for androgynous style is a key part of her identity. A queer advocate, she came out as bisexual in an interview last year, noting that she was surprised people didn't already know.
"I didn't realize people didn't know. I just don't really believe in it. I'm just like, 'Why can't we just exist'? I've been doing this for a long time, and I just didn't talk about it. Whoops."
Eilish, who's previously said that her sexuality was "nobody's business," posted a photo in October with fellow queer icon Phoebe Bridgers, both wearing Misfits T-shirts.
We love Eilish's refreshing attitude and she remains the queen of cool in our eyes.
She Can Also Be A Barbie Girl (On Her Terms)
She also gave "Barbiecore" her own tomboy spin when she won her latest Oscar (she's the youngest ever recipient of two Oscars) for the hit film's theme sons "What Was I Made For?" from the Barbie movie.
Becoming a Gucci Girl
In 2022, Eilish starred in a Gucci eyewear campaign conceptualized by Alessandro Michele, sporting black mesh Gucci logo looks and bold eyewear. The partnership cemented her fashion credibility while upholding her brand of cool-girl punk.
Owning Her Originality
When one thinks of Eilish, baggy shorts and big T-shirts immediately come to mind, specifically in green and black, just like her OG hairstyle. The tomboy feels most at home in oversized, cozy styles so much so that she often rocks them on red carpets and on stage. We've seen her sport everything from oversized bomber jackets to baggy denim co-ords to roomy jerseys. She basically pioneered the baggy jeans trend.
