Kansas coach Bill Self will not coach the Jayhawks in Thursday’s Big 12 quarterfinal against West Virginia after being hospitalized with an illness, the school announced.
“Kansas Men’s Basketball Coach Bill Self will miss today’s Big 12 Tournament game as he recovers from an illness. Assistant coach Norm Roberts will serve as the acting head coach. Self is doing well and receiving great care at the University of Kansas Health System,” the statement said via CBS Sports.
The Jayhawks won their 17th regular-season Big 12 title under Self this season, and are well-positioned to earn the top overall seed in the NCAA tournament on Selection Sunday. The Jayhawks reloaded this season after capturing a national championship a year ago, and currently owns more Quad I wins than any team in the country.
The 60-year-old Self is 707–577 with Kansas and has guided the Jayhawks to four Final Fours, nine Elite Eights and two national championships as the school’s coach.
