Bill Belichick tried to downplay the North Carolina coaching rumors in classic Belichick fashion

Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has already accomplished everything there is to do at the NFL level. But at 72 years old, that retirement from coaching may be short-lived.

Belichick — who has never coached at the college level — has been in talks with North Carolina as a potential candidate to take over the Tar Heels’ program following Mack Brown’s firing.

Now, in the age of NIL and the transfer portal, you’d expect to see programs seek coaches who are familiar with that landscape. But Belichick says he would craft a potential program as a pipeline to the NFL — whatever that means. And in a Monday interview with Pat McAfee, Belichick did his absolute best to downplay the certainty of a leap to UNC.

As McAfee went on to hype up Belichick’s resume and the prospect of him leading UNC, Belichick interjected to say, “We’ll see.”

But hey, there was a smile. As Belichick said, though, we’ll have to see what happens there.
