Bihar: Juvenile caught for bike theft commits suicide

NAWADA: One Sunny Kumar, a 15-year-old juvenile from Gaya, who was caught in the act of stealing a motorcycle at Hisua on Tuesday, "hanged" himself to death in Bal Sudhar Grih (child reformation home) on Friday.

Sunny was sent to the Bal Sudhar Grih on Wednesday by the Nawada Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) principal magistrate Anand Kumar Tripathi. On Friday, the child reformation home's staff heard loud screams emanating from Sunny's room, only to find him hanging from the ceiling. He was rushed to Nawada sadar hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead. Scar marks caused by the rope were found around his neck.

Nawada DM Yashpal Singh Meena has ordered an inquiry into the incident. The body was kept at Nawada sadar hospital's surgical ward under strict police surveillance. None from Sunny family had turned up to the body till the time of going to press.

A team comprising the Nawada sadar civil SDO Umesh Kumar Bharti, SDPO Upendra Prasad and the sadar hospital's Dr B B Singh are jointly investigating the circumstances leading to the "suicide".

SHO of Hisua police station Rajiv Kumar said the boy was handed over to the Hisua police station by locals on Tuesday, when he was fleeing with a bike stolen from the bus stand. "The bike belonged to a person who had come to the bus stand to see off a relative. Sunny's accomplice, however, had managed to escape," the SHO said.

The SHO added Sunny kept the police on toes as he constantly changed his home address during investigation. "A master key was recovered from Sunny's pocket," he said.
