Biggar Rugby Club enjoyed a fine day of rugby on Saturday, as they won their own Sevens tournament.
Hosts Biggar won the men’s event in a final that saw last year’s two finalists going head-to-head, denying charity team Hearts and Balls a rare double, as their women’s team took the honours for the second year in a row.
Saturday saw 15 teams, 180 players, 10 officials, 32 games, 218 tries and 1335 point scored.
From all of that, ladies’ player of the tournament was Hannah Walker of Rugby People, while Biggar’s Mark Bertram took the men’s award, both of which were judged by the referees.
Off the field, there were 80 pre-event lunches, and over 250 spectators enjoyed 600 burgers and six vegan sausage rolls.
Ten teams contested the gents’ event, while five took part in the ladies’ section – Biggar had hoped for 12 and 6, respectively, but were happy with what they got.
Biggar entered two teams in the men’s event, with the first team enjoying a clean sweep of four victories against Edinburgh Agrics, Peebles, Musselburgh and Newton Stewart.
In Pool B, Hearts and Balls recorded four wins, against Scots Guards, Biggar ‘B’, Strathaven and Annan.
That set up the final, with Biggar running out 28-17 winners.
The ladies’ event began as a round-robin format, with Hearts and Balls proving to be very strong, and they swept all before them, defeating Biggar, Kelso and Cougars.
Rugby People similarly defeated Hearts and Balls, but the top two went into the final, with the charity team winning 19-12.
Club president Rab Ramsay said: “It seems some time since the senior season ended, but the Sevens gave those still in training an opportunity to display their skills.
“The rugby on show was just as great, with a very welcome crowd able to enjoy the competition in what was, for the most part, ideal conditions.
“As always in an event of this size, there are a great deal of people who contribute so much to the success of the day.
“Thanks go to the Sevens committee, players, officials, physios/first-aiders, groundsmen, gate guards/car-parkers, scorers, photographers, runners, ball boys/girls, BBQ helpers, caterers, bar staff and anyone I may have omitted.”
