Biggar Rugby Club keep pace at the top of National League 1 with five-try win

Biggar kept pace with Heriot’s Blues at the top of Tennent’s National League 1 with a five-try bonus point win at Cartha Queen’s Park.

Played in difficult conditions, Biggar kept a clean sheet as they won 31-0, but Heriot’s and Gala, so there’s no chance in what is becoming a top-three battle for honours.

Following the weekend break for the Six Nations, Biggar head into crucial clashes with Highland, Heriot’s and Gala, which are likely to determine the league positions going into the final stretch.

With Storm Malik howling around the ground, handling was always going to be tricky, with the ball either blown into or away from the receiver, depending on whether he was playing into or away from the gale.

However, Biggar got the scoreboard ticking inside five minutes when a driven maul allowed Ewan Stewart to dive over for the try, with Euan Bogle converting for a 7-0 lead.

Biggar quickly doubled their lead when the pack was awarded a penalty try, after their initial shunt saw Cartha pushed back towards their line.

Cartha lock Graham Williamson made a promising break, but Biggar’s defence stood firm.

At the other end, Donald Voas looked to have scored a good try, but referee Gregor McIntosh was unsighted, and the sides turned at 14-0.

Playing into the wind, Biggar got off to an almost perfect start when Josh King burst over the line following another successful line drive.

With less than 10 minutes of the half gone, Biggar bagged their fourth try as Ewan Stewart claimed his second of the match, following a well-controlled lineout drive, but the conversion was off-target, leaving the score at 24-0.

However, within three more minutes Biggar had wrapped up the points when Andrew Orr gathered a neat inside pass from Fraser Jackson to burst over, with Bogle converting for the visitors on his occasion.

It looked like Cartha had got points on the board late on, with a kick and chase looking to almost everybody to have been grounded, but referee McIntosh remained unconvinced and Biggar escaped with a goal-line drop out.
