Biggar captain Chris Mulligan expects a battle against Heriot’s Blues on Saturday as the sides meet in a Tennent’s National League One top-of-the-table clash.
A points deduction earlier in the season has the Hartree Mill club three points behind the leaders, but with a game in hand, and a win would put them in a very strong position.
It’s not quite winner takes all at Hartree Mill, but Biggar have only lost twice so far in 15 games and have the biggest points-difference in the league, so it would be a statement of some intent, with six fixtures remaining.
Mulligan said: “It’s going to be a big challenge for us, but we’re really looking forward to it.
“Heriot’s is always a really close game between the two sides, so it’s one that is quite closely-contested.
“I’m not sure what the conditions are going to be like on Saturday, but if it’s anything like the last time we played against them it’s going to be a battle.
“If we win it we go top of the league with a game in hand, which would put us in a really good position for the run-in.
“Hopefully we can maintain that position just by taking each game as it comes, and trying to get the win.”
Biggar have been in this position before, and ‘won National League One in 2020, with a trophy presentation, before Covid hit and the leagues were declared null and void.
Mulligan says that disappointment still drives the players on as they bid to prove they’re worthy of a step-up to the Premiership.
“We had the frustration of that season being declared null and void,” he said,.
“So I think a lot of the players use that to challenge that energy, in trying to get up into the Premiership.
“We feel that’s where we deserve to be playing, but it’s a case of us going out and trying to prove that.
“The only way we can do that is by giving the best version of ourselves and performing, and if we do that, it will take care of itself.”
Mulligan also says making the step up would be rich reward for those who have backed a provincial club through thick and thin.
He added: “Winning the league would be massive for a small, community club like Biggar.
“We get a lot of support, but to get the club in a position to get into the Premiership for all our supporters would be fantastic, something I think they deserve after quite a long period competing in the lower leagues.”
