A big-hearted Dalbeattie teenager is heading up a fundraising challenge in aid of a local nursery.
Kiara Kirk took on the task after having her efforts recognised at the recent inaugural JP Young Volunteer of the Year Awards.
The Dalbeattie High School student was among those chosen as young leaders to run events in support of local organisations in the town.
And now Kiara, 16, is busy organising a coffee morning to make a few pounds for the Little Inspirations nursery.
She said: “Originally I was volunteering for the Brownies.
“I got involved working with all the girls and really enjoyed it.
“Little Inspirations is a community-based nursery and is a really good cause to raise money for.
“It’s all about helping other people and making a difference.
“I think volunteering is really important.
“It’s about being able to bring people closer together as a community.”
Louise Keegan, who organised the awards in memory of her uncle and local volunteer Jock Pickthall, paid tribute to all the JP young leaders.
She said: “Kiara is doing amazing. She’s only 16 and works at the Kings Arms. She’s totally smashing it but it would be good to get some folk behind her.”
The Little Inspirations coffee morning on Saturday July 22 opens at 11am. Entry is £2 for adults and 50p for children with discounts available for families.
Attractions include a prize raffle and children’s activities.
Full details of all the young people’s work and upcoming charity events are available on the JP Young Volunteers’ Facebook page.
