Big asteroids hit Earth more frequently than thought, study suggests

Meteor Crater near Winslow, Arizona, was blasted out by a roughly 165-foot-wide (50 meters) impactor about 50,000 years ago.

A fresh asteroid-strike study is generating controversy among scientists, a report suggests.

A NASA-funded study presented at the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference last week suggests that big asteroids hit Earth more often than previously thought, based on satellite data. But not everyone agrees with the interpretation, according to the journal Science, which says more fieldwork is needed to confirm the data.
