Recent polls have shown that President Biden has made significant strides in winning over independent voters, a key demographic in key battleground states for the upcoming November election. Less than 10 days away from the first presidential debate, Biden has managed to close a 12-percentage point gap among independents and now leads Trump 50%-48% within this group, compared to previous polling data from May.
However, in a head-to-head matchup among voters who are definite about casting their ballots in the November general election, Trump maintains a slight one percentage point lead over Biden (50%-49%). The two candidates are tied at 49%-49% among overall registered voters, including those who are undecided but leaning towards a candidate.
When considering independent candidates such as Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Dr. Cornel West, Dr. Jill Stein, and Chase Oliver, Trump's lead over Biden remains at one percentage point (42%-41%).
Analysis of voter demographics reveals that white voters predominantly favor Trump (55%-43%), while non-white voters lean towards Biden (58%-40%). The two candidates are evenly split at 50% among voters under 45 years old, but Trump holds a slight advantage (49%-48%) among voters over 45.
On key issues, voters believe Trump would better handle the economy, immigration, and the U.S. role on the world stage, while they trust Biden more on preserving democracy, handling abortion, and caring for the average person. Inflation is identified as the top concern by 30% of voters, followed by democracy, immigration, healthcare, abortion, and crime.
Despite the preferences, a majority of voters (55%) express dissatisfaction with both Trump and Biden as candidates, with more Biden supporters (58%) than Trump supporters (49%) expressing discontent.
Both candidates have unfavorable favorability ratings, with 53% viewing Biden unfavorably and 53% viewing Trump unfavorably. Regarding Trump's recent conviction on 34 counts of falsifying business records, 51% believe he should serve jail time, while 47% disagree.
The upcoming debate between Trump and Biden, scheduled for June 27 in Atlanta and hosted by CNN, will mark their first face-to-face encounter in years.
