In an effort to maintain pressure on the Venezuelan president, President Biden has pledged to hold Venezuela accountable for their commitment to democratic elections. While the country has thus far shown adherence to their promise, frustrations continue to mount for families of other Americans imprisoned abroad. One such case is that of a Venezuelan citizen who has been languishing in a Russian prison for nearly five years. Expressing their exasperation, his family recently revealed their disappointment with the Biden administration's lack of progress in securing his release.
Despite the ongoing appeals, Russian President Vladimir Putin remains resistant to any deal that would facilitate the Venezuelan citizen's return home. Last week, President Putin stated that negotiations were desired, but any agreement must be mutually acceptable and satisfactory for both parties involved. The hope among these other American families is that the United States will be able to strike another deal similar to the release of Brittany Greiner over a year ago, which involved the exchange of an international arms dealer.
