Biden administration fails to secure border, Texas takes unprecedented actions

Migrant flights and new Texas law may prompt action from Biden administration.

In Efforts to Secure the Border, Texas Takes Unprecedented Measures

In the ongoing battle to secure the border, Texas is taking unprecedented actions due to the absence of federal government intervention. With a surge in illegal crossings and overwhelmed border patrols, Governor Abbott has been forced to address the issue head-on.

On December 1st, 2021, the number of illegal crossings hit a staggering 200,000, and since October 1st, it has soared to over 686,000. These numbers paint a bleak picture of a system that is anything but safe, legal, and orderly, as Secretary Mayorkas of the Biden administration claims.

To combat this crisis, Governor Abbott recently signed a new law that allows local police to arrest individuals crossing the border illegally. However, this law will not be effective until March. Many wonder if this delay will hinder its impact and whether it will be able to make a difference.

Former acting DHS secretary Chad Wolf expressed his concerns about the magnitude of the problem and the overwhelmed border patrols. With apprehensions reaching 10,000 to 12,000 per day, the situation is nothing short of catastrophic. Wolf emphasized the urgent need for immediate action, as the border remains insecure and unknown individuals continue to enter the country unchecked.

However, despite the severity of the situation, the Biden administration has failed to utilize its existing authorities to address the issue effectively. Secretary Mayorkas repeatedly cites the need for new authorities from Congress, which experts argue are unnecessary. This indecision and inaction have led to American communities paying the price for their lack of leadership.

Critics argue that the new law signed by Governor Abbott may burden local communities. Some border sheriffs express concerns about overwhelming jails and courts, estimating that it could cost an additional $6 million per year. On the other hand, proponents contend that the state and federal governments can provide funding to alleviate these concerns. Additionally, they suggest that federal authorities should work with the governors, deputize local law enforcement officials, and collaborate on securing the border.

The current situation calls for decisive action and cooperation between federal and state authorities. Governor Abbott's efforts to address this crisis are unconventional and groundbreaking. However, they underscore the urgent need for effective border security measures that prioritize the safety and well-being of American citizens.

The challenges facing border communities and law enforcement agencies are significant. A comprehensive strategy that combines resource allocation, enhanced authorities, and cooperation between federal and state entities is necessary to ensure a safer, more secure border region. Only through united efforts and resolved action can we hope to bring an end to the escalating crisis at the border.
