Betting shop could open in 'dilapidated' Bulwell town centre building

An old pawnbrokers in Bulwell which has been empty for a year and is now in a "dilapidated" state could become a betting shop under new plans. The site on Main Street, right in the centre of the town, was occupied by Money Shop from 2015 until the business closed last year.

Since then, it has been vacant and plans have now been lodged for a branch of Boylesports to be based there. Boylesports was founded in 1989 and now has over 300 betting shops in Ireland and the UK.

Plans lodged with Nottingham City Council on June 20 say the proposals demonstrate the "recent success and growth" of Boylesports. The report does acknowledge the potential harms of opening a new betting shop, particularly in terms of income deprivation.

But on this subject, the report adds: "The proposal would bring a vacant unit back into use contributing to the local economy, improving the town centre's vitality and viability. There are only four other premises within Bulwell Town Centre which can be identified as a betting shop or a pay day loan shop.

"Given the previous use of the site, the proposal would not result in a net addition to this type of establishment and would therefore not contribute towards an alleged negative impact on economic deprivation." The plans will now have to be either approved or rejected by Nottingham City Council.
