Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club: Inside the fight to save historic queer-friendly venue from closure

Update November 20, 2024: In August, when El Hunt wrote the piece on this page, Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club looked like it was facing almost certain closure. But, as Hunt reported, locals and club devotees were doing their best to save it. Such efforts are ongoing, and according to the @savebgwmc Instagram account — which is helping drive the campaign — BGWMC remains under threat. “The sellers are still attempting to stop events and their intention is to sell the club. Therefore we still have a fight on our hands and we very much need your ongoing support,” a post reads.

But, after months of performers being out of work, club events have finally begun again. On Saturday November 16, the first event since the August closure took place (”Party Like It’s Y2K!”). Now, on Saturday November 23, a day of action is being held at the club — a party of sorts, but one with the intention of upping support, and increasing the number of signatures on the open letter to Tower Hamlets’ council, in a bid to pressure councillors to debate the club’s future.
