Artur Beterbiev is celebrating becoming the first undisputed light-heavyweight champion in men’s boxing since Roy Jones Jr in 2002. Arguably the sport’s most fearsome puncher saw his 100 per cent knockout streak as a professional end against Dmitry Bivol in Saturday night’s rearranged Riyadh Season headliner, but he still managed to pick up a controversial majority decision victory that has been heavily criticised by many - not least a furious Eddie Hearn.
Bivol will no doubt be seeking a swift rematch having suffered his first pro loss and surrendered the WBA belt he had held at 175lbs since 2017. Beterbiev now has the full set after adding to his WBC, IBF and WBO titles, with two judges awarding him what seemed to be a very close fight 116-112 and 115-113 and the other scoring it as a draw.
On Saturday’s undercard at the Kingdom Arena, Fabio Wardley viciously stopped Frazer Clarke in the first round in a rematch of their British heavyweight title thriller. Jai Opetaia retained his IBF cruiserweight title against Jack Massey after Chris Eubank Jr stopped Kamil Szeremeta before clashing with arch-rival Conor Benn once again. Skye Nicolson kept her WBC featherweight belt against Raven Chapman and an injured Ben Whittaker drew with Liam Cameron after both men flew over the top rope in bizarre scenes.
