Best vitamin B12 supplements that are expert-approved

Despite our best efforts to balance the optimal quantity of fibre, fat, carbohydrates and protein, we may sometimes fall short.

Filling our diet with all the essential nutrients and minerals that the body requires for healthy functioning can be a real challenge. With our busy lives and full work and social calendars, it can be difficult to keep track of our intake. We may find ourselves still deficient in key nutrients – something that is only more pressing when following restrictive diets.

One of the most overlooked vitamins is B12, especially for vegans and vegetarians. It may also be a concern for those with Crohn’s disease, pernicious anaemia, gastrointestinal surgery and coeliacs. However, its importance cannot be undervalued.

What do vitamin B12 supplements do? What are the benefits of vitamin B12 supplements?

According to the National Institutes of Health, “Vitamin B12 is a nutrient that helps keep your body’s blood and nerve cells healthy and helps make DNA, the genetic material in all of your cells”. The nutrient helps the body in the formation of red blood cells, so a lack of it may cause diseases like anaemia. It is also commonly associated with memory, concentration, normal cognitive function, energy levels and vision health – which is all to say that it’s a very important vitamin to maintain in your diet.

Suzanne Wylie, GP and medical adviser for IQdoctor adds, “Vitamin B12 plays a crucial role in maintaining the health of the nervous system, red blood cell production, and DNA synthesis. Supplementing with vitamin B12 can offer significant benefits, particularly for individuals who are deficient or at risk of deficiency, such as vegetarians, vegans, older adults, and those with certain medical conditions like pernicious anaemia or gastrointestinal disorders”.

The benefits are wide-ranging. According to the GP, “Supplements can help improve energy levels, reduce fatigue, and alleviate symptoms such as weakness and dizziness. For those with a deficiency, B12 supplements can aid in improving mood and cognitive function, as the vitamin plays a vital role in the production of neurotransmitters that affect brain health. Additionally, vitamin B12 has been linked to improved heart health by reducing levels of homocysteine, an amino acid associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases”.

Do vitamin B12 supplements work?

Lola Biggs, Dietitian at natural health supplement brand Together Health says, “Due to the complicated absorption process of vitamin B12, in both the stomach and the intestine, supplementation can be useful to regain optimal levels. Vitamin B12 is what we call water soluble and is absorbed in the gut”.

She continues, “Bioavailability is one of the biggest elements when it comes to the effectiveness of any supplement. Other factors that can reduce or get in the way of a supplement working include chronic inflammation, genetic autoimmune conditions, existing gut problems or digestive diseases, and some medications, especially those that reduce stomach acid”.

To optimise absorption, the dietician advises to “try to take your supplement away from caffeinated or alcoholic drinks and opt to have it with food to support maximum digestion”.

How to choose the best vitamin B12 supplement

“Choose a supplement that is sourced from nature in its complete food form which contains all three natural forms of B12, especially methylcobalamin”, Biggs stresses. “Choose those with an optimum dose of 20mcg, and that have organic certification to minimise any unnecessary chemicals or pesticides”.

Are there any side effects of vitamin B12 supplements?

The dietician breaks it down. “You can get mega-high doses of B12 offered through injections, which are prescribed, and some people may experience some symptoms like headaches and tummy issues. However oral supplements, like capsules, powders and sprays are often a lot lower levels, so it is generally safe to take if you follow the recommended dosage. It is advised that safe levels are up to 2mg or less a day of vitamin B12 in supplements are unlikely to cause any harm”.

Suzanne Wylie agrees, flagging too that “In rare cases, allergic reactions, including rash, itching, or difficulty breathing, may occur. People with certain pre-existing conditions, such as kidney disease or Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy, should avoid excessive supplementation, as it could exacerbate these conditions. Overuse is unlikely to lead to toxicity due to the water-soluble nature of B12, as excess amounts are typically excreted through urine, but it’s still advisable to use supplements under the guidance of a healthcare provider to avoid any potential interactions or risks, especially in those with underlying health issues”.
