As the evenings become darker this week now that the clocks have gone back, there is one thing guaranteed to bring some light into the darkness: Bonfire Night. Nothing beats watching colourful fireworks on a dark autumn night.
With crackling bonfires and mesmerising sparklers, there’s something magical about this time of year and it’s always worth wrapping up warm and venturing outside to watch the night sky being lit up.
This year the majority of Greater Manchester councils have cancelled their public fireworks displays. But there are a few independent displays taking place this year, which are open to spectators.

Lots people will be setting off their own fireworks in gardens across the city region as well. If you’re hoping to catch sight of the many pyrotechnic displays happening then it’s worth heading to a high-up viewpoint where you can see all the fireworks over Greater Manchester - plus some excellent views of the city lit up at night.
Peel Tower and Holcombe Hill, Bury
From Holcombe Hill you can see right across the Manchester skyline, as well as overlooking Bury and Ramsbottom, so you’ll be able to spot fireworks from all around. At the top of the hill stands Peel Tower, an impressive 128ft structure opened in 1852.
Werneth Low, Tameside
Probably one of the most popular hilltop locations in Greater Manchester, Werneth Low is located on the borders of Stockport and Tameside. The views from the summit are incredible and you can even see as far as Jodrell Bank in Cheshire.
Hartshead Pike, Tameside
You can see for miles from the top of this hill, with views across Ashton-under Lyne, Mossley, Saddleworth and Oldham. The name refers to both the grade II listed tower and the hill it sits atop.
Cloud 23, city centre
If you don’t fancy heading to a rural location and would rather look out at the city with a cocktail in your hand, then Cloud 23 is the place for you. Located on the 23rd floor of the Hilton Hotel on Deansgate, it’s the city’s best-known bar for breathtaking views.
20 Stories, city centre
This rooftop bar rivals Cloud 23 when it comes to incredible urban views. Despite its name it’s actually higher than the Hilton’s bar, and has an open-air terrace - so you can have all the feeling of being outside on Bonfire Night while sipping on a fancy drink.
