Our outlook on ‘broken’ products has changed dramatically over the past few decades. Mindless consumerism is out, replaced by a vintage ‘make do and mend’ mentality that saw our grandparents through the war years.
This is in part due to the rising cost of things; the UK’s economy has been in trouble since before the pandemic, with lockdown adding to the situation. Sky-high energy costs mean that many household budgets are being diverted to keeping the lights on instead of buying brand new. And the reduce, reuse and recycle movement has gotten into its stride as many wake up to the environmental and financial impact of buying brand new by shopping for preloved and refurbished products instead.
