A question that seems to be on the tip of every well groomed man’s tongue is what is a safety razor and how do I use one? So that’s why we’re here with a handy guide explaining all the tips and tricks you need to keep your stubble in shape using a more sustainable and stylish alternative to the more common disposable or cartridge razor.
What is a safety razor?
Also known as a double edge or DE razor thanks to the two sides of the blade that you use one after the other, it’s a shaving tool with a single blade that has a protective aid between the sharp edge and the skin, reducing the skill needed to use it without causing some serious injury.
First popularised by King Camp Gillette back in the early 1900s, the brand revolutionised the shaving world by making it accessible for men to shave without going to the barbers, and were the predominant type of razor before the cartridge and disposable razor siblings were introduced in the Seventies.
Are safety razors better?
For many reasons, yes.
Unlike cartridge and disposable styles, they’re not crafted using plastic and are usually made out of metal, a more easily recyclable and sustainable material. Designed to stand the test of time, they’re not meant to be thrown away and are instead meant to live happily in your bathroom cabinet for years to come - and they look great, too.
In terms of the finish, they’re less likely to irritate your skin than their contemporary counterparts because they’re sharper, so instead of pulling at the hair they cut through it. Though the upfront cost is higher, you will make this money back in no time compared to constantly having to buy throw away styles.
How do you shave with a safety razor
Cartridge razors consist of many blades in a plastic case with a flexible head that offer a close shave with a reduced sharpness - so you can shave quickly without really considering a blade. On the other hand, a DE razor is sharper and has no flexibility in the head meaning the angle of the blade needs to be considered.
Generally, it’s best to hold the razor at a 30 degree angle. To find it, point the blade away from your skin and gently rock it until it starts to take the hair. We recommend shaving with the grain to avoid any razor burn, nicks or cuts, especially for beginners.
The best time to shave is when stepping out of the shower so your facial hair is at its softest and easiest to cut. To start, you should always lather up with hot water and a shaving cream, soap, or foam, that has moisturising and protective ingredients, with cream being the best choice for novices. Using a shaving brush isn’t essential, but will help to lift the hairs and prepare your skin for the shave - and adds to the experience.
Our top tip? Take your time using short strokes whilst alternating either side of the razor and rinsing under a tap throughout, and make sure your skin is always pulled taut to create a flat surface for the blade.
If you see any leftover hairs when you’re finished, feel free to go over once again to make sure everything is neat and clean cut before rinsing and applying an aftershave balm or lotion to soothe, refresh, and protect your skin.
Once you’re finished, make sure you wash everything off and leave your utensils to dry.
How often should I replace my safety razor blades?
Once every five to seven shaves is the general recommended amount to keep your razor in tip top shape. Dispose of your old blades in a safe place, whether it’s a blade bank, a jar, or the tin they first came in, and recycle them at your local recycling centre.
