Best friends celebrate turning 103 together on the same day in the same care home

Two best friends in a care home have celebrated reaching their 103rd birthday together having been born on the same day, Grimsby Live reports. Kath Wood and Rennie Box both live at the Homefield House Care Home on Weholme Road in Grimsby and struck up a friendship when they met each other in the home.

Having both lived through historically significant events such as a World War and five monarchs, the women who have both had very long and interesting lives have a lot in common. After fate brought them together, the dynamic duo have their own secrets on how they managed to reach such an old age but mostly credit it to their shared 'love for life'.

It seems the key to a lengthy life is remaining upbeat and happy as Kath revealed she always has a 'smile on my face no matter what the situation'. The OAP who has lived in Grimsby her whole life said: "I don't have any real secret, I just love life and the people in it."

She jokingly added: "I'm also a big flirt if that helps. I've enjoyed living here, but it's very different to how I remember it as a child. I've not really been to many other places apart from here and Cleethorpes, but I love it here, Grimsby is definitely my favourite place.

"I wouldn't swap it for the world." Being one of eight siblings, Kath has led a fulfilling life full of adventure. During that time, she worked at an industrial factory for 18 years but admits she wasn't always a hard worker.

She confessed: "Whilst I was at the factory, I was responsible for putting the pins in grenades and had to sit behind a plastic screen whilst doing it. We never did too much work though, we had a lot of fun and played up at times.

"I was always chatting to be honest, but I've loved my life so much." Speaking of her impressive old age, she said: "It's nice to be alive though, I can say that much. I've been spoilt today I have to say, but that bit I quite like."

Celebrating alongside her was Kath's best pal, Rennie Box who also lives in the home and turned 103 on the same day. Rennie's family had a strong presence in the fishing heritage of the town but the OAP made her living as a dinner lady at Wellholme school where she enjoyed working for many years.

She said: "I managed to survive the war and was once knocked off my bike by an American car, but I'm still going strong. That, along with my independence is what's got me to this age I think.

"I've also never drank or smoked in my life which has probably helped too." She added: "To have two of us turn 103 is great for the home and for us both to celebrate together is such a special moment.

"It's just so lovely to have our families here and to be with my friend to enjoy it all."
