Best dog coats to keep your furry friend warm and dry this winter

Your dog might not quite be spending his or her free time scrolling through ASOS but there's a fair chance they also want a jacket to wrap up warm this winter - even if they don't know it yet. As the season changes and the coldest time of year arrives, your dog's natural coat might not be warm enough to protect them from the elements.

Some dogs will need a coat before others. Greyhounds and other typically thin dogs might need a coat all year round while dogs with thicker, fluffier coats (Samoyeds and retrievers, we're looking at you) might be fine until the very coldest days of the year. Some dogs develop a thicker coat for the cold season but, when the sky is stormy and rain is brewing, it might not be enough to prevent a doggy cold.

So, perhaps now is the best time to invest in a dog jacket to keep your canine friend cosy and warm. Luckily, doggie jackets come in all styles, shapes and sizes, so you'll almost definitely find one to suit your pooch.

If you're just looking for something to add an extra layer of warmth, you can probably make do with any jacket. If your walks tend to fall at the same time as the rain hits, it's worth looking for a waterproof (or at very least, water-resistant) jacket to avoid those eau d'wet dog scents when you arrive back home. If you'll regularly be hitting the snow, you can buy thicker jackets with longer sleeves that provide extra warmth.

The more stylish pets among us might prefer a designer option to fit in amongst their fashionable doggy pals. So read on for a few doggy fits that fuse form, function and fashion all together.
