If you’re guilty of flicking to the back of magazines to find the horoscopes section, then it may well be time to get an astrology book of your own.
Perhaps due to Gen Z’s obsession with self-discovery, the study of horoscopes has become a cultural phenomenon in its own right. The ancient practice has become ultra-accessible thanks to the internet, which has helped astrology go mainstream via various social media channels and apps.
However, there’s nothing like a good book to help untangle the intricate web of astrology. Anyone who has ever texted their parent asking what time they were born will understand that horoscopes are more complex than they seem. Sure, you can always consult an online birth chart generator, but what does it really mean to be a Leo rising or Cancer moon?
What is astrology?
Astrology is a type of divination that involves the forecasting of both human and earthly events via the observation and interpretation of stars. Astrology followers believe that the planets and stars can predict and influence their destinies and help them gain greater self-insight and connect with the universe.
Examples of such earthly events might include career, relationship and health insights wrapped up into a weekly horoscope based on when and where you were born.
We’re all asked what sign we are at some point in our lives. Usually, we stick to the basics and respond with one of the 12 Zodiac signs. Yet that’s only a tiny piece of the jigsaw puzzle. To understand the full scope our our birth charts, we need to know minute details such as the exact month, day and time we were born and where.
According to astrology, these seemingly unimportant details are vital for understanding who we are, how we move through the signs and what planets and luminaries (the sun and moon) we were born in.
What are Zodiac signs?
The Zodiac is a belt-shaped region of the sky that sits within about 8 degrees on either side of the ecliptic - a circle that defines the apparent path of the sun as it moves among the constellations over the course of a year.
In Western astrology, this path is divided into 12 equal signs: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. Each of these star signs has its own distinct features and traits. “You’re such an Aquarius.” Ever heard that one?
The Zodiacs are organised into four elements; earth, air, fire and water, with each category representing the traits of those born under that particular sign.
For many, horoscopes are a source of great comfort. There’s something incredibly liberating about holding the stars accountable for our futures. Answers to questions such as “When am I going to find love?” or “Will I find success at work?” could all be found in an astrology book. No need for Hinge, it’s written in the stars. It is, however, always important to take it with a pinch of salt.
