It wasn’t just any Australian batter who was bowled out by John Venn’s machine (Wooden bowling arm that bested Australian cricketer in 1909 rebuilt, 10 June) but Victor Trumper, the world’s most famous batter at that time. Trumper’s first Test had been WG Grace’s last, at the end of which Grace had presented the Australian with his bat and anointed him with the words: “From the present champion to the future champion.”

• Yes, Mishal Husain “twice picked up Penny Mordaunt on her use of the statistic”, but Mordaunt ignored her, spoke over her and mentioned the Tories’ £2,000 tax claim several more times. She should have been sent off (Labour and Tories renew clashes in ill-tempered second election debate, 7 June).
