Best balcony heaters to warm your outside space

Outside space, of any flavour, is precious in London.

While some properties boast gardens, if you live in a block of flats, we’re guessing you’re probably making do with a balcony. When sunny weather hits, we’ll take any space to soak up the rays.

Of course, this being the UK, one can never rely on a stable supply of sunshine. While a Tuesday might deliver sub-tropical highs, it could snow by the end of the week.

It seems a shame to be discouraged from balcony living if the weather strays a little off-script. A good heater is all you really need to keep the space warm and welcoming.

What heater is safest for balconies?

Unless you live on the top floor, your balcony is likely enclosed by flats above and below it, which rules out traditional gas, wood or coal-fired heaters. Anything with a flame poses an obvious risk - not just to your household but to other occupiers and the surrounding area. In addition, many leases forbid the use of balcony heaters so go through your contract before buying anything.

Electric infrared heaters are some of the safest around and the best bet for those with larger balconies to heat.

How do infrared heaters work?

They convert electricity into heat via coils that radiate warmth into a zoned area - like a wall-mounted heater in a beer garden. They are incredibly energy-efficient too, so good news if you’re trying to curb costs.

How to pick the right heater for your space

If you’re considering investing in a little warming device, measure your space first to ensure it fits. Choose one with a waterproof rating, even if your space is sheltered from the elements (it has been known to rain sideways on this great isle of ours). And consider a wall-mounted design to free your floor space from clutter.

If you’re in the market for an outdoor heater for your patio or balcony, we’ve rounded up the best options to check out below.
