Best areas of Bristol for a young professional to live according to Redditors

As home to Bristol University, the University of West England, thriving job opportunities and loads of places to explore and experience, it’s no wonder Bristol has become especially popular among younger people. But with the price of housing in and around the city still so high, many people looking to move here have to rule out the city centre itself.

In search of some less obvious options, one young professional took to Reddit to ask Bristolians for their suggestions. The poster, who is looking to move to the city for work in September, asked where the best place to live is for a ‘new young professional’.

The poster, who was looking to rent a spare room, said rents seemed "insanely high" in the city centre so they were open to a commute of up to 30 minutes. They were also after somewhere they might bag a parking spot, which is often a rarity when it comes to Bristol rentals.

With only a few requirements and a budget of under £900 for a house share, the response to the criteria was mixed - with some saying the poster would struggle to tick all the boxes, while others said it was completely doable.

The most suggested place in the comments section was the St George area, which is just a 13-minute drive from the centre and under half an hour on the bus. It's even quicker to cycle, or if the weather is kind then the 40-minute walk makes for an easy commute.

One commenter said: “St George/Redfield lots going on, still “up and coming” but close enough, with some of the slightly better public transport lines operating on this side of the city.”

A second penned: “I just bought near Troopers Hill, so slightly further out but still St. George. I grew up in Easton /St. Pauls but have been well priced out of that area. I'm enjoying it here, as you said buses aren't 'too' bad, lots of nice things to do close by, it's nice to be back in Bristol after many years away.”

With a third writing: “I recently moved to this area from Southville and am really enjoying it, so second this choice. I can walk to the centre in 20/25 mins, plus some great pubs and cafes as well as the park.”

Another area popular among commenters was the Filton area and with two train stations in close proximity, travelling into the city isn’t too bad despite being a bit further out. There are also smaller and quieter neighbourhoods like Cheswick Village if you want something a little quieter.

One commenter said: “Filton Abbey Wood station will get you to Temple Meads in under 10 mins. Not loads going on around that area, but it's not too far from Gloucester road if you walk or pretty quick if you catch a bus / Voi.”

While another, who suggested the Cheswick estate, said: “I have just bought a flat in Cheswick village after 2 years of renting here and think it’s a really underrated spot to live. Takes 20 mins to get into the centre of town on the metro buses, super close to Abbey Wood & parkway train stations and is right next to Stoke park which is a nice green space. It is quite round here though and there is a lack of pubs / bars unless you go to Filton which isn’t far.”

Other areas that received a mention or two in the comments section included Horfield, Clifton, Bedminster and Old Market. While not all in the same area, all are within easy reach of the city centre with their own high streets too.
