Building the wrong kind of artificial intelligence (AI) could one day carry a penalty more commonly associated with nuclear weapons.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Greg Casar (D-Texas) announced the Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act on Sept. 3, a proposal that would permanently prohibit the development and deployment of artificial superintelligence and temporarily pause advanced AI development until new federal safety rules are established.
