Berlin crash: car smashes into crowd of people outside busy store

Witnesses have described the terrifying moment a car ploughed into a crowd of people on a bustling Berlin street.

At least one person was killed and 30 more injured in what some passers-by suspect was a terrorist attack in the German capital.

The vehicle crashed outside a department store in Rankestrasse in Charlottenburg, Berlin, Germany at 10.30am on Wednesday.

Further details were unavailable on the driver of the car or whether they deliberately drove at the crowd.

The Mirror reports how one image said to be from the scene shows a scene of utter devastation in the car's wake - with piles of chairs and tables destroyed in the crash.

Doctor Who and Dancing on Ice star John Barrowman, who witnessed the incident, told his Twitter followers: "We think we have witnessed a terrorist attack here in Berlin.

"We’re not sure there’s a lot of people dead bodies all over the place.

In a video, Mr Barrowman described the situation as "really bad" and said he hid behind a tree to protect himself in case of another attack.

Describing the scene, he said there was a huge emergency response and said he could see a dead person laying in the middle of the street.

German police have confirmed the suspect is now in custody.

It's still unclear whether the crash was an intentional act of a traffic accident.

German police confirmed the suspect is male.

They told Tages Spiegel: "We do not yet know whether it was an intentional act or a traffic accident.

"We arrested the driver and are clarifying the matter."

A spokesperson for the German capital's fire service told Reuters around 30 people were injured.

"A man is believed to have driven into a group of people. It is not yet known whether it was an accident or a deliberate act," police said, adding that he was being held at the scene.

The incident took place near the scene of a fatal attack in 2016 when Anis Amri, a failed Tunisian asylum seeker with Islamist links, hijacked a truck, killed the driver and then plowed it into a crowded western Berlin Christmas market, killing 11 more people and injuring dozens of others.

The 24-year-old had been asked to show his identity documents by police before pulling out a pistol who then returned fire hitting the suspect in the chest.

Security officials later confirmed "without any shadow of a doubt" that the dead man is Amri after identifying him using his fingerprints.
