Bergwijn's heroics, what Paratici did before game - 5 things spotted in Leicester vs Tottenham

Bergwijn made to wait

The postponement of last Sunday's north London derby against Arsenal meant that Antonio Conte was allowed some extra time on the training pitch with his Tottenham squad.

Confirming in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Arsenal game that Steven Bergwijn was available once again and would be named on the bench rather than starting, the cancellation gave the Dutchman a few more days to build up his fitness after a recent calf injury.

However, there was to be no start for the attacker at Leicester as the Spurs head coach persisted with a 3-5-2 formation as Harry Winks joined Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp in midfield.

Bergwijn was given his opportunity to make his case to Conte in the final 11 minutes of the contest and he did exactly that.

Appearing to snatch a point deep into stoppage time as he fired in from close range, he then turned the game on its head 79 seconds later as he rounded Kasper Schmeichel to score.

Conte has already admitted how important Bergwijn is to him amid talk of a January switch to Ajax and his cameo appearance highlighted why he must remain in N17 beyond the end of the month.

Looking like he needed a goal last season to spark into life, his late double could just be what he needs as he looks for a big finish to the season as Spurs eye up a top-four place.

What Paratici did ahead of the match

Fabio Paratici faces a huge 12 days at Tottenham as he looks to strengthen the squad ahead of the January transfer deadline.

Following a number of incomings and outgoings at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the summer as part of a much-needed rebuild, there hasn't been a lot of movement so far this month.

Yet to bring in a new player despite right wing-back, central midfield and striker seen as priority positions for Tottenham, Dilan Markanday has been the only outgoing after joining Championship side Blackburn Rovers.

With all fans hopeful of a few signings before the end of the month, Paratici was spotted on the pitch at the King Power Stadium ahead of the game on his phone.

So was he perhaps working on a few transfer deals for Conte?

It was a common theme during the summer prior to the transfer deadline as the managing director of football was always seen on his phone before matches.

Tottenham fans will be hoping it very much is the case as they look for the squad to be freshened up.

Reguilon's return

Spurs have struggled down the left flank in recent games with Sergio Reguilon missing out through injury.

Ryan Sessegnon, his understudy, started in the FA Cup third round clash against Morecambe but it was right wing-back Matt Doherty who got the nod for the Carabao Cup semi-final showdown vs Chelsea.

The Republic of Ireland international didn't look comfortable at all in an unnatural position and it was clear to see when he kept cutting inside on to his right foot when in good positions.

With Reguilon involved in full training last Friday, he was named in Conte's XI to take on the Foxes.

His return to the team certainly gave Spurs a better balance and he was involved a lot early on down the left as he linked up with Harry Kane to create a couple of openings.

However, he will have felt that he should have done much better for Leicester's opener after his clearance fell perfectly for Patson Daka in the 24th minute.

Spurs fans send message to Levy

Tottenham fans were once again in full voice during Wednesday evening's game against Leicester City.

Despite the current issues across the country and a date for this game only confirmed a fortnight ago, Spurs were backed by a full allocation in the away section at the King Power Stadium and they didn't stop singing throughout.

Trailing 1-0 despite controlling the game and having plenty of chances to score, Spurs fans sent a clear message to chairman Daniel Levy prior to half-time as chants of "We want Levy out" could be heard from the away section.

It hasn't been a good couple of years for the club on and off the pitch and the fans have made their feelings crystal clear to the chairman.

Doherty capitalises on Emerson woes

It's not hard to see why a new right wing-back is a transfer priority for Tottenham this month going on Emerson Royal's showing against Leicester.

The Brazilian just didn't have an impact on proceedings against Brendan Rodgers' men and duly made way at half-time.

Emerson's exit saw Doherty introduced in his natural position and the ex-Wolves man made more of an impact than his teammate within minutes of the restart.

Linking up well with Kane down the right not long after he entered the fray, Doherty then curled wide with his left foot from just outside the box.

Impressing in the match between the two at the King Power last season, the 30-year-old took his chance but it only highlighted their current woes in the position ahead of the January transfer deadline.

Talk of Adama Traore moving to Spurs may not have gone down exactly well amongst the fanbase but it would have been the perfect game for the Wolves man with lots of space to run into due to the gaps created by Leicester.

It is now down to Paratici to solve the problem for Conte with the clock ticking down until the transfer window.
