Benni McCarthy explains who is responsible for Marcus Rashford's Manchester United form

Benni McCarthy insists the improvement of Marcus Rashford this season has been a testament to the work of the entire Manchester United coaching staff, rather than just himself.

McCarthy was handed a role in Erik ten Hag's coaching staff last summer, just months after the Dutchman arrived from Ajax. The pair have not worked together previously, and the announcement of the South African's arrival from AmaZulu FC came as a surprise.

A former striker at Premier League and Champions League level, McCarthy was handed the task of improving United's attack, and his impact has been seismic. That has been seen particularly in the improvement of Marcus Rashford, who is enjoying his greatest season with 25 goals and 11 assists in 51 appearances.

McCarthy has often been cited as the reason for Rashford's improvements this season, but the Reds coach insists it has been a team effort.

"That's not just down to me," McCarthy told iDiski Times. "We are a team. Like I always have said to everyone 'there's no I in team'. When we do things, we do things as a collective.

"We try and achieve the best that we possibly can. So all the coaches contribute. Everyone has their function in the team to try and just make the team have success and that."

Speaking in March, Rashford detailed the work he and McCarthy have undergone since the South African's arrival and praised the coach for his impact on the attacking unit.

"Benni has been great with me," the United striker said. "Like I said before, with all the forward lads and you have to remember that Benni is part of a full coaching system so everyone plays their roles… so Benni is actually on top of what we need.

"Yes, his relationship with me is very good. We speak a lot, we are always analysing games and showing me ways to improve. You know, small things that can help me make more chances, more goals, maybe create space for other players as well. We are doing a lot of work."
