In a surprising twist at Cincinnati Bengals training camp, seventh-round rookie D.J. Ivey has been one of the breakout players of note.
And now he’s got an elite nickname given to him by veteran teammates.
As captured by Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com, team leaders such as Mike Hilton have hit Ivey with a new “Poison” nickname:
Hilton has been watching the 6-1 Ivey, the man they have to start calling “Poison.” The wide receivers have been Ivey-covered.
“He’s been having a heck of a camp,” Hilton said. “His length is a problem down-field.”
Ivey has registered several interceptions and sticky coverage over the course of camp so far, even ending as one of the top performers at the Back Together Saturday event.
If this keeps up, Ivey has a serious shot at the final roster, which is fitting, because he’s certainly got a great new nickname to go with his breakout play upon arrival in the pros.
