Benfica 'risks' could allow Jurgen Klopp to unleash prime Liverpool weapon

Liverpool are known for possessing a wealth of different strengths at the moment. Jurgen Klopp's men are strong from set-pieces, in possession, when allowed to counter-attack and everything in between.

Benfica are scheduled to face the full force of Liverpool's armoury on Tuesday evening as the Champions League returns. The Portuguese outfit are the underdogs and based on their recent performances, they could be about to present the Reds with a platform to showcase their first-choice weapon.

Since Klopp took charge, Liverpool's strength has been founded upon pressing. "No playmaker in the world can be as good as a good counter-pressing situation," he once said.

Liverpool have mastered the art of pressing since Klopp's appointment in 2015. They have posted a total of 354 high turnovers in the Premier League this season, which is at least 64 more than any other team.

Those turnovers have resulted in 57 shots being generated by the Reds - which again places them top of the division - and they have also scored the most goals from high turnovers with a total of six.

It is integral to Klopp's game and upon inspection of Benfica's recent showings, they could be set to struggle against the six-time champions of the illustrious tournament.

Of the last six goals that Benfica have conceded - excluding set-pieces - four of them have originated from the team attempting to build from the back before making a mistake or losing the ball.

"They are a football playing side, in all positions. They are ready to take risks," Klopp said in his pre-match press conference. "They open up the formation in possession. We have to win balls. We have to adapt - it's a mix of technical players and good organisation. They are dangerous."

As a consequence of Benfica's approach, Liverpool are likely to gain plenty of opportunities to force them into errors high up the field, before capitalising by finding the net. By 'opening up their formation', Benfica will present the Reds will a platform to cut them open in an instant whenever the ball is regained.

As Liverpool look to qualify for the semi-finals of the competition, they could be about to rely upon their first-choice strength to get them there.
