Benefit concert to raise money for Ukrainian students to be held in Scottish city

A BENEFIT concert has been organised to raise money for Ukrainian music students living in exile.

A concert for Ukraine: Anna Fedorova will take place on October 28 in Edinburgh’s Queens Hall and will feature Ukrainian classical pianist Anna Fedorova as the principal soloist, with supporting performances from the Aurora Ensemble and the Scottish composer Phamie Gow.

A GoFundMe fundraiser has been launched to raise money for the concert, with an initial target of £10,000.

The money will go towards funding music education; Fedorova (below) is founder of the Davidsbündler Academy in The Hague, which supports young Ukrainian performers and students who have had to flee their home country.

The school relies entirely on Federova’s performance fees and the various fundraising concerts she puts on.

Fedorova will perform the following pieces:

  • Sylvestrov: Messager
  • Chopin, F.: Nocturne Op.27 No. 1 in C sharp minor
  • Chopin, F.: Nocturne Op.27 No. 2 in D flat major
  • Phamie Gow: Peace Song for Ukraine.
  • M. De Falla: Suite El Amor brujo (1915); 15 minutes
  • Movements : Pantomima, Danza del terror, El círculo mágico, Danza ritual del fuego

The orchestra Aurora Ensemble will perform:

  • Sibelius: Finlandia
  • Smetana: Sarka, from My Country
  • Peter Maxwell Davies: Farewell to Stromness
  • Helen MacKinnon: The Pearl of Scotland

Commenting, concert organiser David Black said: “We would appear to be living in a world in which an aggressor nation regards a missile attack on a children's hospital in a European capital as a legitimate act of war.

“In the face of such barbarity, how should we react? We could start, perhaps, by considering the healing power of music.”
