Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman are set to star in the upcoming film 'The Roses,' a modern retelling of the 1989 classic 'The War of the Roses.' Directed by Jay Roach and written by Tony McNamara, the dark comedy is based on the novel by Warren Adler.
The story revolves around Theo (played by Cumberbatch) and Ivy (played by Colman), a seemingly perfect couple with successful careers, great kids, and a vibrant sex life. However, beneath their idyllic facade lies a simmering cauldron of rivalry and bitterness that erupts when Theo's professional aspirations come crashing down.
'The Roses' promises to be a wildly funny yet deeply human tale, according to Searchlight president Matthew Greenfield. The project brings together a stellar team, with Cumberbatch producing under his SunnyMarch banner alongside Leah Clarke and Adam Ackland, who have been developing the film since 2017. Colman will also produce under her South of the River banner with Ed Sinclair, Tom Carver, Roach, and Michelle Graham.
The film marks the first collaboration under a two-year first-look deal between Adler Entertainment Trust and Searchlight Pictures. Jonathan R. Adler and Michael Adler, from Adler Entertainment Trust, serve as executive producers, expressing their excitement to introduce a new generation to the legacy of 'The War of the Roses.'
The original adaptation of Warren Adler's novel was released in 1989 by 20th Century Fox, directed by Danny DeVito and starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner. The film received critical acclaim, winning awards and earning BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations.
Cumberbatch is represented by Conway van Gelder Grant and UTA, while Colman is represented by CAA and United Agents. Roach is represented by UTA, Mosaic, and Behr Abramson Levy Johnson. Searchlight Pictures' Richard Ruiz and Pete Spencer are overseeing the project, reporting to DanTram Nguyen and Katie Goodson-Thomas.
'The Roses' is a highly anticipated project that brings together top talent in the industry, promising a fresh take on a beloved classic.
