Ben Shephard says wife Annie gets 'annoyed' with his mum for 'spoiling' him

Ben Shephard has revealed that his wife gets 'annoyed' over the relationship he has with his mother.

During Thursday's Good Morning Britain, Ben and his co-host Kate Garraway were discussing the fact if mums should stop spoiling their sons when he made the admission.

They were referring to the Pope's recent tough love-style parenting advice for frustrated, but "overprotective" mothers with adult sons who simply won’t "leave the nest".

The duo invited Ingrid Tarrant and former Apprentice star Thomas Skinner onto the ITV breakfast show to debate the topic.

Thomas said that he is a self-confessed 'mummy's boy' and admitted he has no idea how to use an iron.

Speaking about his own experience, Ben said: "My wife with my boys does look after them and spoils them and does everything for them and my mum probably does that for me.

"And I know Annie gets annoyed about my mum and my relationship and me being spoiled my mum and I can see it with her and our boys," the 47-year-old TV presenter added.

Ingrid replied: "There you go and it's really interesting that you can, because mine is completely a different take.

"I mean, I want my boys to be quite independent and to be able to do things, I don't want to hand them over to another woman and they become mum mark two."

Ben has been married to his wife Annie Perks since March 2004 and the couple share two teenage sons Sam and Jack.

Mother-of-two Kate also spoke about her own relationship with her son and said: "I think it's interesting what you say Ingrid about the fact that parents who do it are perhaps making up for something, I think I might be guilty of this with my son.

"And I think one of the reasons why is it feels like the more he grows up, there's so many complicated things that you can't fix for them, and so when they say, 'I'm hungry, cook me a meal or where's my shirt?' it feels like something I can fix and mother them a bit, so it feels like I dunno, it's just a way of sort of protecting them in terms of the things I can't protect them from."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV and ITV Hub.
