Ben O'Connor has been confirmed as Cork’s new under-20 hurling manager.
A senior All-Ireland winner in 1999, 2004 (as captain) and ‘05, O’Connor will call on former county teammates Rona Curran (St Finbarr’s) and Anthony Nash (Kanturk) as selectors along with Ger O’Regan (St Finbarr’s) and Terence McCarthy (Midleton).
The Newtownshandrum man, who also won four county titles, two Munster and an All-Ireland club title, has cut his coaching teeth with Charleville and Midleton in recent years, winning premier intermediate and senior county titles with them respectively.
Cork have enjoyed success in the under-20 grade in recent years, winning the All-Ireland in 2020 and ‘21, with their previous success coming back in 1998, when it was under-21 and O’Connor was part of the side that completed two-in-a-row.
And expectations will be high that he can deliver another under-20 title given that he’ll be drawing from a group that comprehensively won the All-Ireland minor title last year.
“We are delighted that Ben has come on board to oversee such an important age group,” said Cork chairman Marc Sheehan. “No doubt, the development of our players is in safe hands.”
