After leading the Detroit Lions to a top-5 offense two years in a row, Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson continues to grow in league-wide status. Look no further than Pro Football Focus rankings of the best offensive coordinators in the league entering the 2024 season.
In PFF’s ranking, Johnson claimed the top spot.
Admittedly, he has been aided by one of the best — if not the best — offensive lines in the league, but he should still get plenty of credit for putting together one of the most versatile and dangerous offenses in the NFL.
Detroit could and did rely on the running game, calling the second-most run plays (33) on third and fourth downs with three or more yards to go and also achieving the second-highest EPA per play on those runs
In two full seasons at the controls of the Detroit offense under head coach Dan Campbell, Johnson’s unit has finished 5th in scoring both years, with a 3rd place and a 4th place in yards.
The success has led to Johnson being a popular head coaching candidate in the last two offseasons. Fortunately, the 38-year-old is back to lead the loaded Lions offense for another season.
