Everton suffered late pre-match drama as Ben Godfrey was withdrawn from the starting line up to face Liverpool.
Godfrey, who had impressed in recent weeks and kept his starting place despite the return of Yerry Mina against Leicester City, was due to partner Mason Holgate in the centre of Everton’s defence.
But in the final warm-up drills on the Anfield pitch Keane had replaced him among the first eleven. Everton have now confirmed he will not start, though the club has not confirmed the reason.
FINAL FIXTURES: Everton's remaining Premier League games compared with Burnley
Frank Lampard had already made two changes from the midweek draw at Goodison Park, with Mina replaced by Holgate and Fabian Delph by Abdoulaye Doucoure.
Mina was not in the matchday squad, meaning Keane earned the call-up for Godfrey ahead of Jarrad Branthwaite.
Godfrey’s late injury comes just weeks after a similar scenario moments before Everton’s defeat at West Ham. On that occasion Donny van de Beek was forced to withdraw just before kick-off.
