Ben Garner Charlton deal 'agreed' but fresh twist, Barnsley manager talks: League One headlines

Former Bristol Rovers manager Ben Garner continues to feature prominently in the headlines, heavily linked with a switch to League One rivals Charlton Athletic.

But the story continues to take twists and turns despite multiple reports indicating a deal had been done to take Garner to The Valley.

Elsewhere, Barnsley are another third-tier club without a manager but they appear to be closing in on an appointment. The transfer market, too, is steadily kicking into gear with pre-season just a few weeks away.

Here is a roundup of the latest headlines from around League One...

Garner 'agrees two-year contract'

It appeared a formality that former Rovers boss Garner would take charge at Charlton after reports emerged last month that terms had been agreed to tempt him away from Swindon Town.

The story has dragged on, though, with Charlton yet to unveil the 42-year-old as their next boss, with some Addicks fans quick to question his appointment.

However, multiple reports on Saturday stated personal terms and a compensation package for Swindon had been agreed, with negotiations over backroom staff ongoing.

But there was a fresh twist on Sunday when Charlton released a statement insisting the club "are still not at a point where a final decision has been made", criticising what it described as "inaccurate" reports.

Garner was sacked by Rovers in 2020 after a difficult 11 months in charge, but he had a better time at Swindon, narrowly missing out on the League Two play-off final while playing an impressive brand of football.

Barnsley make moves in manager search

Relegated Barnsley are yet to decide on who will replace Poya Asbaghi in the Oakwell dugout, but they appear to be closing in on a successor.

The Yorkshire Post reports the Tykes have narrowed their shortlist to five candidates, with hopes of making an appointment by June 13.

Burton Albion manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is on the list, as is Cheltenham Town boss Michael Duff. Gloucestershire Live reports Duff will hold talks with Barnsley on Monday.

Barnsley chief executive Khaled El-Ahmad has confirmed Chesterfield manager Paul Cook is not in contention for the job.

Plymouth return unlikely for Broom

Former Rovers prospect Ryan Broom has been transfer listed by Peterborough United, but Posh believe Plymouth Argyle's interest in signing the playmaker again has waned.

Posh paid a six-figure fee to sign Broom from Cheltenham in 2020, but he has played just 17 games for the club, spending much of the past two seasons on loan at Plymouth and Burton Albion respectively.

Broom was a prominent player for Argyle last season, providing four goals and seven assists in 48 appearances, but Peterborough director of football Barry Fry does not think Plymouth will look to make the move permanent.

He told the Peterborough Telegraph Argyle's interest in Broom has waned since Ryan Lowe's departure midway through last season.

European interest in defender

Belgian side Royal Union Saint Gilloise have Accrington Stanley defender Ross Sykes on their radar, according to reports.

The Sun's Alan Nixon writes the Stanley academy graduate, who has previously been linked with Middlesbrough and Millwall, could move overseas this summer.

The 23-year-old has already made more than 100 appearances for Accrington, scoring 11 goals.

Rotherham United and Barnsley have also been linked with Sykes in recent weeks.

Owls hope to re-sign defender

Sheffield Wednesday are mulling a return for Birmingham City defender Harlee Dean, according to Yorkshire Live.

Dean spent the second half of last season on loan at Hillsborough, with Lee Bowyer deeming the centre-back surplus to requirements at St Andrew's.

Dean's spell with Wednesday was affected by injury, but Darren Moore seemed to like what he saw in the defender's eight starts and is tempted to try to lure him back this summer.
