Before the excitement at Ibrox this evening, Rangers' U19s were in action as they faced off against Liverpool in the UEFA Youth League. The Light Blues were looking to pick up their second victory in the group after a home win over Napoli in Glasgow last month.
The young Gers hosted the Reds at Firhill this afternoon but were unable to keep them at bay, with the clash finishing 4-3. It was a perfect start for Liverpool who went ahead through Oakley Cannonier after just eight minutes of play. But David McCallum's young Rangers side fought back to even things up just two minutes later. It was Charlie Lindsay who stepped up to score from the spot after the home side were awarded an early penalty.
Liverpool hit back quickly though, with Melkamu Frauendorf taking the lead back for his side in the 18th minute. Rangers looked for an equaliser for the second time as the first 45 continued as a Robbie Ure header drifted narrowly wide. But it was Liverpool who scored again, with Cannonier finding the net for the second time.
After going in 3-1 down at the break, Rangers had it all to do in the second half. But they would continue their fight back against 10 men after Liverpool's Lee Jonas was sent for an early back just one minute into the second half following a foul on Robbie Ure.
And fight back is what they did, with Arron Lyall slotting home from close range after some great link-up play with Zak Lovelace to reduce the deficit to one with just under half-an-hour left on the clock.
And just 10 minutes later, Robbie Ure levelled things up once more, with his first goal of the game making it 3-3 at Firhill.
But it was former Celtic starlet Ben Doak who broke the hearts of the young Rangers side in the closing 10 minutes of the clash. The 16-year-old winger made it 4-3 to the Merseyside club, who prevented a second victory in the group for the young Govan men despite their best efforts in the closing stages at Firhill.
