Ben Davies back on Celtic transfer agenda as Parkhead side 'make contact' with Liverpool and asking price set

Celtic have 'made contact' with Liverpool over a potential move for Ben Davies this summer as Parkhead chiefs revive their interest in the centre-back.

The 26-year-old looked set for a move to the Scottish Premiership before he left Preston for Anfield in January 2021. However, the move to the English Premier League hasn't worked out for Davies and he has not kicked a ball for the club in a competitive game, with the Champions League finalists finally set to cut their losses this summer.

He was named on the Liverpool bench eight times last season after his loan spell at Sheffield United was cut short due to injury, but he doesn't look likely to get a second chance under Jurgen Klopp in pre-season. That has opened the door for Ange Postecoglou to make his move this summer as he looks to add reinforcements to his backline ahead of the Scottish Premiership campaign.

Davies signed for an initial £500k when he left the English Championship, which could have risen to £1.6million with add-ons. However, he has yet to meet any of the requirements in a deal and the club demanded a £500k loan fee from Sheffield United to secure his services last term.

And despite already making their money back on the player, the Liverpool Echo report that the club are looking for "an overall package" of £4million to let Davies leave this summer.

They state that both Middlesbrough and Celtic are interested in signing the defender this summer and have both made contact, but neither have placed a formal bid.

Cameron Carter-Vickers and Carl Starfelt are the undisputed centre-back pairing at Parkhead ahead of the new season.

However, Postecoglou could be looking for back-up with Christopher Jullien only receiving 16 minutes of game time under the Australian.
