Belgium manager Roberto Martinez insists Thierry Henry's past with Ireland is irrelevant

Roberto Martinez tonight insisted Thierry Henry's handball has nothing to do with tomorrow's Aviva Stadium occasion.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Belgium's friendly clash with Ireland, Martinez tried to take the heat out of Henry's first touchline appearance in Dublin since the infamous World Cup play-off handball incident in Paris in 2009.

Henry's controversial goal sank Ireland's hopes of qualifying for the tournament and many Ireland fans haven't forgiven the former Arsenal and France superstar for his actions.

The 44-year-old is now a valued part of Roberto Martinez's backroom team and has no concerns over the reception that could await Henry at the Aviva Stadium today.

"I think you’re asking the wrong person," Martinez said.

"Thierry created incredible moments and created incredible stories as a player, and now he is in a completely different role.

"Now Thierry Henry is not a player anymore, he works with the national team and his work is very, very important.

"For me to comment on what Thierry Henry did as a player is out of place."

Meanwhile, Belgium skipper Youri Tielemans has thanked Ireland boss Stephen Kenny for describing the midfielder as one of the best players in the world.

“I can only thank him," Tielemans said.

"Honestly, it’s great to have appreciation from footballing people and I always try to do my best and always progress well on the pitch and to learn from the best, which I do with the Belgium national team.

"We have a great squad. I know from my young age, I’ve a lot of experience, I’ve been in the game for eight years and I always try to be a better player and better man every day."
