Belfast schoolgirl aiming to break own record with cracking Easter egg collection

We might be only a few days into January and still getting over Christmas but that hasn't stopped one Belfast schoolgirl from looking ahead of the next big family event, Easter 2023.

Jasmine Parker is already gearing up to deliver a record breaking 2,000 Easter eggs to sick kids across Northern Ireland this April.

Jasmine - aka Belfast's very own Easter bunny - distributes the eggs to kids at hospitals and the children's hospice.

The 13-year-old from north Belfast has collected thousands of chocolate eggs for poorly children over the past six years.

Back in 2016, Jasmine was concerned that children in hospital over the Easter period would not get a visit from the Easter bunny so she decided to brighten up their days.

Since then each Easter, the kind-hearted teenager has personally distributed eggs to young children at the Royal Victoria Children's Hospital, the Ulster Hospital and the NI Children's Hospice.

She also includes those at Altnagelvin, Daisy Hill and Craigavon hospitals.

For her proud family, including mum Maggie, their role has been to help make room for all the eggs in their front room and load the car up to chauffeur charitable Jasmine from one location to the next.

Last year she hit a new record with 1,618 eggs collected over the previous four months, having set an original target of 1,100.

With her Easter egg collection complete for another year, Jasmine still had plenty to look forward to last year.

She was crowned Junior Miss Galaxy Ireland in 2021 and headed to Texas in August to compete and represent Northern Ireland in the world finals.

This August she'll compete in Miss Diamond UK with the chance to represent Ireland at Regency International in Las Vegas in July 2023.

But as soon as Christmas 2022 was over, Jasmine, a pupil at Belfast Model School for Girls, was back with her Easter collection in the hope of making more children smile.

She's already bought the first Easter egg for this year's appeal and over the next few months, she hopes to amass quite a collection.

"Jasmine bought her first Easter egg for this year's appeal on 2nd January and to get the ball rolling to reach her target this year of 2,000 so she can get to every hospital in Northern Ireland," Maggie told Belfast Live.

"Last year, she missed out on just two hospitals – Antrim and Causeway – as we ran out of eggs so she wants to make sure everywhere is covered.

"She's always thinking of how to help others and will say 'Mummy what can we do?'"

And given Jasmine's 2,000 target, Maggie admits that the Easter egg collection has now outgrown her living room.

She explained: "They aren't all going to fit in the living room this year so they'll be stored in my mum's house. She has two spare bedrooms so we're taking over one of those as there's nowhere else to store all 2,000 of them and I hope we can make this happen."
