Belfast Royal Avenue cultural hub reopens in old Tesco building in Belfast

The events hub at 2 Royal Avenue in Belfast City Centre reopened its doors on Tuesday morning.

Many in the city will remember it as the building where a Tesco Metro was housed before it closed down in October 2021.

The beautiful building used to be a bank before Tesco took on a 25-year lease there in 1995.

With that lease up, it became a short-term hub for arts, music, workshops and markets, when Belfast City Council bought the building.

It had been closed from September to November last year for what Belfast City Council called "internal improvement works" at the time, with the aim being to provide new facilities and to improve the existing café on-site.

Tuesday saw it reopen with the Council announcing several new features, with some especially of interest to young people and their parents.

"Look out (for) an art installation, cosy kids' area, library reading corner, homework station, sensory dome & Yallaa kiosk, serving food & drinks," Belfast City Council tweeted.

The venue will be open daily from 10am-6pm.

A Belfast City Council spokesperson said: “We are delighted that 2 Royal Avenue has reopened its doors to the public and we look forward to hosting events in this iconic building in the heart of the city centre in the near future.

"Keep an eye on Belfast City Council’s social media for updates."

In the past it has hosted screenings of popular children's films, music workshops and live gigs as well as the popular Santa's post office and other festive events.
