Belfast pensioners praise Jet2 for prompt compensation payments

Two pensioners have praised the airline Jet2 for their prompt compensation payment over a flight delay.

The East Belfast women, who asked not to be named, had booked a holiday to go to Turkey last month.

But when they arrived at Belfast International Airport they found their flight to Dalaman had been delayed.

“We went on the 19th of May and were delayed just over four hours,” they said. “Being delayed over four hours going that far you get a wee cheque. The cheques arrived for £350 [on Wednesday].

“It was Jet2 and they are fantastic. They took us off the plane and luckily there was another plane there to us on and we were able to continue our journey. We went for 11 days and had no problems coming back.”

The women said applying for the compensation couldn’t have been easier on the Jet2.com website

“You just apply on the Jet2 website and they gave us a voucher off our next holiday,” they added. “I filled in the form waiting on the plane waiting for it to taxi to the stand.

“If it’s under 3,500 miles, if you are delayed 3.5 hours it’s £220 and if it’s less than 1,500, I think you get £150 - but it depends where you’re going. We were going to Dalaman in Turkey and it was over 3,500 miles so we got the maximum of £350.

“Jet2 is brilliant - we don’t fly with anybody else.We find they are the best, they are no hassle.”

A statement on the Jet2 website says: “Compensation is potentially payable under Regulation EC261 if your flight’s arrival has been delayed for more than three hours, the flight has been cancelled, or you have been denied boarding.”

EU Regulation 261 is a European law that was put in place to protect airline passenger rights. It includes protection for passengers whose flights are delayed over three hours or cancelled. The law states passengers are entitled up to £520 in compensation depending on their circumstances.

According to the Your Europe website, the rules stopped applying for denied boarding, cancellation or delays to flights from the UK to EU if the flight was operated by a UK or non-EU carrier from January 1, 2021. It does apply from the UK, however, if the flight is operated by an EU carrier.

This includes airlines like Easyjet, Aer Lingus and Ryanair, which also have online EU261 claims forms on their websites.
