Sir Kenneth Branagh has won the best original screenplay Oscar for Belfast.
Collecting the statue, he said: “This is an enormous honour for my family and a great tribute to an amazing city and fantastic people.” He added: “This story is the search for joy and hope in the fact of violence and loss. We lost some people along the way.”
He continued: “We miss them, we love them and we will never forget them and we we will never forget all of those lost in the heartbreaking, heart-warming human story of that amazing city of Belfast on the fabulous island of Ireland. This means a lot.”
Sir Kenneth had been expected to miss the awards, after missing several award ceremonies earlier this week due to testing positive for Covid-19. Speaking to ABC’s On The Red Carpet that it was “beautiful to see a Belfast story speak to the world.”
Sir Kenneth added he was “delighted” to be nominated in a record-breaking seven categories at this year’s awards but “more delighted to be here.” Meanwhile, the film's young star, eleven-year-old Jude Hill, promised to be US actress Sofia Carson’s date for the night as the pair met on the red carpet - and he gave her a kiss on the cheek.
