Belarusian hockey player Konstantin Koltsov, who had a notable career in the NHL with the Pittsburgh Penguins, has tragically passed away at the age of 42. The news of his death was confirmed by his Russian team on Tuesday.
Koltsov, a former player for the Pittsburgh Penguins, had a stint with the team from 2002 to 2006, playing a total of 144 games. Following his playing career, he transitioned into coaching and was serving as a coach for Salvat Yulaev in the Kontinental Hockey League.
Salvat Yulaev, based in Ufa, Russia, expressed deep sorrow over Koltsov's passing, describing him as a strong and cheerful individual who was beloved by players, colleagues, and fans. The team acknowledged his significant contributions to their history and extended heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.
The Pittsburgh Penguins also paid tribute to Koltsov, recognizing him as their first-round draft choice in 1999 and highlighting his time with the team from 2003 to 2006. He was remembered as a teammate of hockey legends Sidney Crosby and Mario Lemieux during the 2005-06 season.
Tragically, Koltsov's death was confirmed as a suicide by the Miami-Dade Police Department in Florida. The incident occurred at the St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort, where Koltsov reportedly jumped from a balcony. Authorities have ruled out foul play in the investigation.
In addition to his hockey career, Koltsov was known for his relationship with tennis star Aryna Sabalenka, with whom he went public in 2021. Sabalenka, currently competing in the tennis circuit, has not yet publicly commented on Koltsov's passing.
Throughout his professional hockey career spanning from 1997 to 2016, Koltsov played in various leagues including the Russian Super League and the Belarusian Extraleague. He also represented Belarus internationally, competing in the Olympics and World Championships as part of the Belarusian national team.
