Beeston street where race for parking spaces is a 'free for all'

Homeowners in Beeston have spoken of difficultly parking and crossing the road. Residents on Peveril Road, Beeston say that students and university visitors park on their road, causing it to be very busy.

Residents told Nottinghamshire Live what life near the road is like and what they would like to change.

Terry Mulloy, 80, has lived on the road for around 31 years and has had issues with vehicles being parked near his house. "It's always the same," he said. "The only problem we have had is someone parks over our drive on the pavement.”

“It’s always busy when the students come back, you can’t blame them, there are around 25,000 students. The lorries and buses can’t get through, people have complained for years. It’s bad, it’s all over Beeston and the council totally ignores it. It’s a lovely area, I love Beeston, I love this road, it’s just busy.”

Another resident, Abigail Charles, 31, who is a nurse, told Nottinghamshire Live that during the holidays the street is very different. She said: “It’s awful - you can tell when the students are here, it’s rammed. As for the summer holidays, it's empty." Abigail added: "People clearly use this as a through road and go quite fast, you can’t cross safely.”

According to residents some drivers park on the pavement, whilst others park on the road, making it difficult for big vehicles to pass. Student physician at the University of Nottingham Daniel Antonio, says that if the road is made to have permits it will have a knock on effect on neighbouring streets as others will park there instead.

The 24 year old said: “It’s just a bit naff isn’t it? Unless you’ve got a driveway it’s a free for all. There’s lots of students, we are students here, we rent. If they make this a permit road, the next road will be full of students and people visiting the university, and then the next and next one. It will get worse on the next road.”

Another resident, who didn’t want to be named, left notes on cars due to the issues on Peveril Road. She said: "I think people are very inconsiderate, it’s not surprising. This is a very residential area and people aren’t very considerate. We are people with the elderly and families.

“People that work in Beeston town centre keep doing it as well. All the residents are very fortunate, we are very good to the students. Over the summertime when the students go, I calm down a bit. As a resident I am annoyed, I have even left notes.”

Liberal Democrat County Councillor for Bramcote and Beeston North Steve Carr said residents have been in touch with him in huge numbers about parking issues on Peveril Road and other local streets in Beeston.

"As a result, I had a meeting on 24th May with highway’s bosses at County Hall concerning the parking issues that are experienced daily in Beeston," he said. "I am pleased to report that officers and myself agreed that we have tried all approaches with the University and UPP (the company that looks after Kenilworth Court) and that a different way forward is needed. We will now take matters into our own hands.

“The County Council will be looking again at a resident's parking scheme which will go out to consultation over the next few months. Details are not yet available but it will be a mixture of permits and restricted parking hours. As soon as I am aware of the proposals, I will let all the residents know. We need to get this right and officers are aware that the previous scheme was not to everyone's liking. I am confident we can resolve this so that the resident’s nightmare parking situation will be solved once and for all."

Gary Wood, Head of Highways and Transport, said: “A consultation with residents about a potential parking scheme on Peveril Road was held previously, however the low number of residents that responded to the consultation meant that the scheme was not able to be implemented.

“We urge all motorists to think before they park and consider how their parking will affect other road users. It is really important to think about whether emergency services vehicles can get down your street, should they need to.

“When parking, it is important to do so in a way that does not inconvenience and endanger others. Parking good practice tips can be found on our website: https://www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/transport/parking/parking-enforcement

A University of Nottingham spokesperson said: "The overwhelming majority of our students do not use a vehicle while studying with us and living in the local community, instead choosing to use the excellent local public transport network, including our free Hopper Bus.

"We know that the vast majority also make a positive contribution economically, culturally, through volunteering activities and generally being good neighbours. However, when issues do arise, we work in collaboration with local partners including councillors and the police to educate students about the serious impact that inconsiderate behaviour can have on residents."
