Beefeater hopes the Queen will watch Jubilee special of BBC's the Repair Shop

Chief Beefeater Peter McGowran hopes that his boss, Her Majesty The Queen, will watch The Repair Shop tomorrow night as he completes a mission of national importance.

Peter, 64, appears in a Jubilee special of the show, arriving in full uniform with a very special lantern steeped in Royal tradition that is used every night at The Tower of London.

The 103-year-old latern - which is made of solid brass - was given to the Yeoman body as a gift by a visiting regiment in 1919, and is part of the 700-year-old Ceremony of the Keys.

The historic ceremony sees the warders lock up the Tower of London as well as the Crown Jewels every night.

The heavy lantern has broken glass, smashed-in legs and a very wobbly handle, leaving Peter panicked that the candle will blow out from the wind or the whole thing will fall apart.

Ex-RAF regiment military man Peter has been Chief Yeoman Warder since 2018, with him in charge of the 33 Yeoman Warders, who are better known as the Beefeaters.

Peter, lives in the Tower with wife Debbie 64, who was also in the RAF. He said: "This is a very special lantern. I march out at 21.53, on the dot. This is because the Ceremony of the Keys has to be done dead at 10pm.

"It's a massive responsibility, you have the Crown Jewels there and 20 towers. The Tower of London has been there since 1078. We love looking after our boss, Her Majesty."

The special episode of the BBC show sees horologist Steve Fletcher and stained-glass expert Matt Nickels had the responsibility of restoring this national treasure.

Peter commented: "I've got people from all over the world who come to see the Ceremony after an 18-month waiting list. Can you imagine if the handle fell off?

"I thought I have to do something about this. I'm a massive follower of The Repair Shop so I requested special permission from the governor of the Tower to take it on the show.

"The lantern has looked after us for 103 years, now it's time we looked after her. I just thought the time to do it was the Platinum Jubilee year, for our history, our traditions. This is my bit for the boss."

After the lantern arrives, Steve and Matt get to work fixing it up with new glass, smoothed-out legs, a sturdy handle and a good polish, leaving Peter rather overwhelmed.

He says: "Well I never! No rattling! I'm chuffed to bits, I've never seen anything so shiny. They did an excellent job. It looked like it had just come out of a factory brand new and it was absolutely gleaming.”

And asked whether the Queen be watching the special edition of The Repair Shop, which will air tomorrow evening, Peter responded: "Oh I truly hope so."

The team also works on an unfinished Pearly Whites suit as well as a hand-painted commemorative plate made to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1887.

Viewers will also see the team work on a tandem bicycle that'd been created by welding two normal bikes together back in 1977 - the year of The Queen's Silver Jubilee.

The Repair Shop: Jubilee Special will be broadcast tomorrow night on BBC One from 8pm. It will also be available through BBC iPlayer.
