'Beckham used his links' - Lionel Messi Inter Miami transfer claim sends fans wild

Lionel Messi is seemingly back to his best this season, even though the forward has just turned 35. In 17 games so far for Paris Saint Germain, he has 12 goals and 13 assists which ranks him alongside Erling Haaland for goal contributions so far.

So it then came as a shock when reports linked him with a sensational move to the MLS in the near future to join up with Manchester United legend David Beckham's Inter Miami side. Though the quality of the league in the US has improved, it has still not shaken its reputation as a 'retirement home' for aging European stars.

There are other options on the table, however. PSG of course want to keep Messi as he still performing at the highest level and he has also been linked with a sensational return to Barcelona.

If Miami - managed by another former United star in Phil Neville - were able to secure his signature, it would prove a massive coup for the league given his quality. It would also be a coup for Beckham's side as it would immediately make a team that crashed out in the first round of the playoffs this season, potential contenders in the next.

Fans of course have had their say and their reactions are mixed. Most believe that Messi still has a lot to give at the highest level and it would therefore be disappointing if he moved to the MLS.
